The developments threatened to overshadow a new “action plan” that Jeremy Hunt, the Chancellor, said he had agreed with regulators on Wednesday to ensure consumers are being treated fairly. The Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), Britain’s biggest pension fund and Thames Water’s only UK shareholder, is supportive of injecting fresh money into the business, senior sources added. Hope remains that a deal can yet be done, however. The Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System, which owns a 32pc stake in Thames, is said to be reluctant to inject fresh capital into the business after a series of poor investments in the UK.Ĭity sources said they were aware that another of Thames’s nine predominantly overseas investors was yesterday also still yet to decide whether to pump in money to save the company, which has 15 million customers. ![]() In a sign of the battle now facing Thames, its biggest shareholder is understood to have drafted in restructuring and insolvency experts from the Magic Circle law firm Clifford Chance to advise on its options. It added that it was prioritising several companies including Thames and SES. In an annual review of the water industry published at the end of last year, Ofwat said that it was “monitoring and engaging with companies on a prioritised basis, based on our assessment of their financial resilience”. SES Water, which supplies about 745,000 people in south-east London, West Sussex and Kent, has been put up for sale by its Japanese owners after they baulked at putting new money into the business. Any failure of Thames risks having a significant impact on the company’s hunt for a new owner. However, restructuring and insolvency professionals from Big Four accountants such as PwC and Alvarez & Marsal are already advising other water companies on their next steps in an attempt to head off a wider crisis. ![]() The environment minister Rebecca Pow, who discussed Thames’ predicament at a meeting with regulator Ofwat on Wednesday, told the House of Commons that “the sector as a whole is financially resilient”. Meanwhile, documents released last week suggested that the leakage rate from Thames Water pipes was at its highest rate since 2018 despite efforts to fix the problem. It comes as the industry battles accusations it has been slow to tackle leakages and is allowing rivers to become heavily polluted with raw sewage.Ĭustomers are already facing a 40pc rise in their water bills over the next five years to pay for the cost of tackling the sewage crisis, according to leaked documents, while the Met Office said earlier this week that the UK is set to have the hottest June on record this year – raising the prospect of fresh hosepipe bans in the coming months. “We need to make sure that Thames Water as an entity survives.” Kemi Badenoch, the Business Secretary, told broadcasters on Wednesday that she was “very concerned” about Thames and added: “Obviously this is a commercially sensitive situation and I know that my colleagues across government are looking at what we can do. Ofwat, the industry regulator, warned in December that it had concerns about the financial resilience of several other water suppliers. ![]() An administration could last six months or more, City sources said.įears are growing that the collapse could trigger a domino effect across the industry, which is laden with £60 billion of debt built up during years of lower interest rates. Talks are ongoing and a rescue deal could yet be agreed, but the Government is preparing to put the company into special administration if needed – meaning that the business would be controlled and bankrolled by the taxpayer until a buyer can be found. Officials are laying the groundwork for the emergency nationalisation of Thames Water as investors refused to give the company a £1bn lifeline. Whitehall was on Wednesday night drawing up contingency plans to nationalise swathes of Britain’s water industry as the country’s biggest supplier teetered on the brink of collapse. ![]() Not all Bengals have defined rosettes – they have spots more like a Leopard, with no outline of colour. Plus, Abrams notes, you never know when one of those inquiries might turn into serious business. “I can appreciate that not everyone has seen as much success with Houzz as I have, but I think it’s ridiculous not to give out a paint name-I mean, paint colors are not a secret! Is it that much sweat off my back to tell someone ‘This paint color is Benjamin Moore Shaker Beige’ and make their day?” “You do get a ton of people who are kicking the tires and have no idea what the cost of your work is,” he says. But if they’re not in that phase or don’t have the budget available to them, they should have other options.”Ībrams readily admits that he fields many questions and inquiries that don’t all turn into paying clients, but for him, that interaction is well worth it. “Would we love everyone to hire an interior designer and an architect? 100%. “Our #1 goal is to make sure we’re not interfering with the ability for people to hire designers when they’re excited about their work,” Liza Hausman, Houzz's VP of industry marketing, tells AD PRO. Laizure runs Interior Design Community, one of a number of social media groups where designers (who often work alone) can foster a collective consciousness, and one of the primary promoters of the Houzz petition. “Their going rate for increased exposure on Houzz is about $3,500 a year, and for a small designer that’s a big financial loss," says Laurie Laizure ($3,500 per year would net out to just under $300 per month, so somewhere between one and two Pro Plus zones). Designers say that most of the leads coming in through the service present unrealistic budgets or simply want to get a quote before embarking on a project themselves. Petition signees, though, feel that the return on investment for an interior designer advertising their services through Pro Plus is minimal. “People mark photos they like and then notice that many of them are mine, and they see that commonality and reach out saying, ‘I saw this pattern and I thought I’d give you a call,’” says Abrams. ”įor more information on how to use Houzz, check out their tutorial page for professionals."For somebody in New York to say, 'I want to work with a Chicago designer is amazing,'" says Abrams, who believes his activity and large following give him a leg up outside his Pro Plus zone (Abrams has also secured clients from Seattle, Baltimore, and New York through the site and has fielded inquiries from locales as far-flung as Dubai). You can even ask other professionals you’ve collaborated with to leave you a review so that you move up in search results.Īccording to Houzz, the way they determine the order of professionals in their directory is “ based on an algorithm that takes into account several factors, including the number and quality of photos in your profile, the number of questions you’ve answered, whether you sport a Houzz badge on your own website, and whether you have reviews from past clients or other professionals with whom you have worked. You can either upload your own photos, or you can find photos on the website. Houzz also allows you to create ideabooks that you can share with your clients. Speaking of photos, it’s important to add as many pertinent, high-resolution, and beautiful photos of your past projects as you possibly can.īefore and after photos are a big hit on Houzz – include as many of these as possible, too. You need to keep these terms in mind when you fill out your profile information and when you upload photos of your work. I like to complete a majority of my tasks from my Apple Watch. ![]() On the other hand, if you are in the Apple Ecosystem, you will be treated with very good compatibility between Apple Devices. I do think that they are missing out on a large market here. This is a real shame and I can’t understand why they made this decision to only support Apple devices. I use multiple devices with various operating systems such as Android and Windows and Things 3 is sadly unavailable on these systems. Things 3 works great if you use multiple devices that are in the Apple Ecosystem, but that’s where it fails me. I use Things 3 on my iPhone 12, Apple Watch SE and iPad Pro and can honestly say that I’m not looking to switch anytime soon. You can read my full article on why I moved away from Notion here. I found the Notion mobile app to be too cumbersome for managing my daily life. I can argue that its simplicity makes me more productive, I migrated my dashboard from Notion into Things and it was the best decision I made in a long time. I know I said this a few times now but the design of the app is absolutely beautiful. I like having a progress ring next to the project because it shows how much work I have completed which makes me a bit more productive. For example, I have movies to watch and books to read projects under the personal section, it just helps keep things organised (Once again, no pun intended). The one thing I like about the app is the ability to make sections for specific things. The logbook isn’t a feature I make use of but it’s still nice to see the tasks that have been completed. I use the Someday area for non-urgent tasks that I can afford to procrastinate on. These tasks are tasks that need completing but it wouldn’t hurt if they are completed later. I use the Anytime area for tasks that don’t have a due date and I can complete any time. The upcoming area shows all the due tasks you have upcoming which is always useful to see. I mainly use this feature as a Home Screen widget on my iPhone 12 so that I know what tasks I’m doing that day. The Today area lists all the tasks that you have due on that particular day. It’s the perfect place for ideas to shine. Inbox is a technique I’ve been using in many apps, I’ve been using it in Trello, Notion and even OneNote. ![]() I use it as a default location for my tasks and I then move the task to the appropriate project. The app features an Inbox area where you can list your ideas that don’t have a due date. The main thing that brought me to Things 3 is the phenomenal design, there are just no words for it, it’s amazing! The simplicity of the interface combined with some useful features is what makes the app stand out in my books. ![]() Let’s get into specifics… Phenomenal Design In all seriousness, the app is a joy to use and it would break my heart if I had to give up on it. I’ve been using it to manage my daily life, personal projects and for just remembering things (No pun intended). I can easily say that I’ve been using Things 3 for a very long time now and I think it’s brilliant. Mac, iPad and iPhone apps are all separate You have to pay separately for different platforms e.g.In one of his videos, Christopher presented his Things 3 setup and it turned out that that’s just the app I was looking for! It was clean and tidy and had a lot of useful features. But then I discovered Cristopher Lawley from the Untitled Site on YouTube. ![]() Things 3 is an app I never thought about trying out due to its upfront cost, I guess I was just worried that I won’t like it, so the upfront cost put me off. Don’t get me wrong these are well-built apps but they were just not working for me and my needs. I tried some of the most common apps such as ToDoist and Any.do and the default apps such as Reminders. I’ve been on the lookout for a ToDo list app to manage my daily life for a very long time. ![]()
![]() While Rolex’s history of making diving watches dates back to the 1950s, we’re highlighting newer models (that have either been recently discontinued or recently introduced) to ensure optimal performance and reliability while you are underwater. With a variety of case sizes and materials to choose from, there is a range of Rolex dive watches that many women will find comfortable wearing, regardless of how the brand chooses to advertise them. Plus, pioneering ocean explorer and marine biologist, Sylvia Earle, often takes her Rolex Sea-Dweller during underwater expeditions. However, that certainly hasn’t stopped its female clientele from wearing them! Celebrities and fashion icons like Charlize Theron, Lindsay Lohan, Drew Barrymore, Queen Latifah, Cameron Diaz, and Sharon Stone have all sported Rolex dive watches. We should mention that Rolex markets all its dive watches as men’s watches, so you won’t find any dive models grouped among the women’s Rolex watches on the brand’s site. Thankfully, there are several Rolex dive watches for women, which means you can have both style and substance. As a Rolex fan, you want a watch that looks as great as it performs. There are few watchmakers out there that offer a dive watch, at this price range, with a comparable level of case finishing. As a scuba diver, you need a highly functional watch. Cartier typically is very keen on ensuring the finishing is something they focus on in their very high to mid-range luxury watches such as the diver. Much of the Calibre Diver case is brushed but there are fine polished elements along the edges of the lugs and other areas. I do tend to like the look of a Calibre on a bracelet but on the rubber strap it fits so snugly and wears like a glove. The last Calibre I wore was on a bracelet. For my wrist at least it wears wonderfully, wrapping around my wrist with those curved lugs. The 42mm wide case is a great size that wears large but is really reasonable in its dimensions. Much of the watch is standard Calibre which is a good thing. Overall I feel that most “thickness conscious” watch lovers will have nothing to complain about.Īs a “real diving tool” the Calibre Diver is ISO 6425 certified and pressure tested in water before leaving the factory. It is also just over 1mm thicker than the standard Calibre model. That isn’t exactly “ultra-thin,” but is certainly not thick for a modern dive watch. First of all, this is among the thinnest 300 meters dive watches out there being 11mm thick. Honestly, if you are a typical dive watch guy there is a lot to find appealing here if you want to ignore that you suddenly have a status watch on your wrist when wanting to be active. What I want to do is explain the watch to guys who typically like dive watches but not Cartier – at least a sporty Cartier. Many people will already like the Calibre Diver without me having to explain it to them. Sure the diver has a rotating diver’s bezel and a slightly bolder dial, but aside from the rubber strap and deeper water resistance this is the same classy men’s watch I’ve come to really enjoy. To be honest not that much is different from the standard three-hand Cartier compared to the Diver. While I sort of expected that 2014 was going to bring us a Calibre GMT, it rather gave us a diving version of the original. The Calibre has been one of our favorite men’s pieces from Cartier and we’ve known that it was to serve as a foundation for a range of new models. We debuted the Cartier Calibre Diver here back before we got a hands-on look at it at the SIHH 2014 watch show. ![]() Yes, there are Cartier “sport” watches… but a legit diver, water resistant to 300 meters that you can still wear with a tie and be taken seriously by Europeans taste makers? I didn’t think it possible but the Calibre Diver is it. I am not even sure that a dive watch from the famously elegant and classy Parisian brand makes sense on paper, but now that one exists I sort of really want it. ![]() As mixed up and backwards as the industry may be, it still has the power to create items that I suddenly desire which I would have never thought appealing until they were brought to my attention. That is how the peculiar “desire engine” of the watch industry works. One of the last things I was expecting from Cartier for 2014 was a dive watch, and now that we have one I can barely imagine not wanting it. |
